Fun in the Sun at Two Beach Workshops!

I was so glad to head to the beach last week to lead two workshops at Figure Eight Island in North Carolina! These workshops were graciously organized by the owner of Tyler White O'Brien Gallery, Kathy O'Brien, and hosted at the Figure Eight Island Yacht Club. These large groups of artists enjoyed two great days of creating fun and colorful nautical paintings. The breathtaking views from the Figure Eight Yacht Club provided the perfect backdrop for creative inspiration. The panoramic windows overlooking the marsh was the ideal "art studio" for observing art demonstrations, for learning new painting techniques and for creating our very own masterpieces.

On Monday, we created a vibrant marsh scene inspired by the tranquil landscape around Figure Eight Island. Everyone developed beautiful brushwork to create movement and interest in these lovely paintings!

On Tuesday, we created a spunky blue crab dipping its claws in the ocean. While the idea of painting a crab was daunting for many in the beginning, I promised he wouldn't pinch and everyone had a fun bringing this little guy to life on the canvas!

I feel incredibly fortunate to travel to some of the most beautiful venues in North Carolina to paint with you!

Grandfather Country Club Workshop Highlights

Last week, I was fortunate to catch a break from the summer heat and spend a couple days in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. My “Painting Light” workshop was held at the lovely Grandfather Country Club in Linville, North Carolina at the Art Loft. Nestled against a breathtaking mountain backdrop, an enthusiastic group of artists joined me for two days learning an exciting new method of building light driven landscape paintings. I was very impressed by the group's poignant questions and eager willingness to try new painting approaches and techniques! Over the course of the workshop, we developed skills which included successfully sketching, creating strong value based compositions, making powerful color choices and most importantly letting light drive all of the decisions in our paintings!

I want to sincerely thank each of you for taking the time out of your vacation to paint with me at the Art Loft! I certainly hope you enjoyed taking the workshop as much as I did teaching it. I also want to thank Barbara, David and Cambey for all of your time, help and generosity in making my adventure to Grandfather Country Club such a delightful one!

Next up on my summer workshop schedule are two nautical workshops at Figure Eight Island in Wilmington, North Carolina. Please join me and Tyler White O’Brien Gallery for a fun, relaxing time with good friends creating your own masterpiece! Two follow-the-leader workshops will take place at the Figure Eight Island Yacht Club on Monday, July 20 and Tuesday, July 21 from 10:00am-2:00pm. On Monday, we will paint a colorful marsh scene and on Tuesday, we will paint a fun blue crab (click here to learn more). Please note that there is no painting experience needed to take these workshops. All painting supplies are included and you will leave each workshop with a completed and framed painting. To learn more and to sign up, please click here or on the button below!

Thank you again for a successful mountain workshop and I look forward to painting with you soon at the beach!

I am so glad to be a part of Tyler White O'Brien Gallery's 3rd Annual Crayons Matter Show benefit event on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Tyler White O'Brien Art Gallery in Greensboro, NC!

Crayons Matter was created in 2011 to provide needed school supplies such as crayons, paper, and backpacks to children in struggling regions of Africa. These materials help provide the basics of personal health education while inspiring the children’s strong imaginations. To learn more about Crayons Matter, click here.

It was fun to work with crayons to create my 11x14 mixed media on paper donation (see snapshot above) and it will be auctioned off at this fundraiser! It is always very rewarding when my artwork can assist others and do good in our communities, both near and far!

"Light Driven Paintings" with Kelley Brugh

I want to thank you all for taking time out of your gorgeous day yesterday to spend it with me in Mooresville, NC! I am so appreciative of the large turnout and warm welcome from Mooresville Arts. I also want to thank Gail Black for her assistance helping to coordinate this event. In the backdrop of a neat historic train station, I demonstrated how to break down a complicated and lightless photograph and reconstruct it into a dynamic and light driven painting. In the process, I also helped everyone learn the keys to creating depth and excitement in a landscape painting.

You may click here to see a few key points from the presentation. To see more of my light driven paintings, please feel free to click here and also visit Shain Gallery and Tyler White O'Brien Gallery!

Mooresville Arts Features Kelley Brugh

I am delighted to announce that I will be the featured artist in March at Mooresville Arts! Mark your calendars for March 8, 2015 at 2:00PM as I will present my popular presentation, "Light Driven Paintings: Painting Light Instead of Objects." At this event I will help you learn how creating landscape paintings are not necessarily about painting the objects in them, but instead about painting how the light describes these objects. Come and learn the keys to creating an interesting light source in your artwork and discover a method of building a successful oil painting around it. In this fascinating live demonstration I will help you learn how to paint what you see, not what you know!

If you missed this presentation at the Matthews Artists Guild in November this is another great opportunity to catch it and I welcome you all to attend. This demonstration will take place at the Depot located at 103 W Center Ave, Mooresville, NC 28115.

I want to thank the Mooresville Arts for the invitation to host this special event and I look forward to seeing you all next month!

Happy Thanksgiving!

New painting  inspired by a family stroll through Freedom Park.

Happy Thanksgiving to all! I am grateful for each of you and I hope that you all are enjoying a relaxing holiday with family and friends.

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow."  - Melody Beattie

Cheers!

"Light Driven Paintings: Painting Light Instead of Objects" with Kelley Brugh

Last night I was honored to both speak and demonstrate in front of a packed house of 70+ family, friends, artists and art enthusiasts in Matthews, NC. It was a powerful and humbling experience to be so warmly welcomed at the Matthews Artists Guild by such a large group of members and non-members alike! I sincerely thank each of you for your interest in taking time out of your busy days for me and to learn about light driven paintings. A special thanks also goes out to Mindy Martin and Matthews Artists Guild's president Nancy Kennedy for the invitation, time and help with the behind the scenes work that made last night possible. I enjoyed engaging with the group as we explored a method of transforming a "lightless" photograph into a dynamic painting.

Below are a few snapshots from the event:

I am grateful for the amazing support and turnout and I hope that everyone enjoyed the evening as much as I did. Take care and keep in touch!
